What Is Levitra?

Vardenafil, known under the brand name Levitra is a prescription medication for male erectile dysfunction treatment. It belongs to a class of drugs called PDE5 inhibitors. Levitra increases blood flow to the penis, which helps gain and sustain an erection during sex. Levitra's active ingredient works on the chain of reactions within the penis during arousal, when the corpus cavernosa (two large chambers) in the male's penis fills with blood, resulting in an erection.

Levitra can cause a serious and dangerous drop in blood pressure (hypotension) if it is taken with some other prescription medications. The individual may experience dizziness and fainting. There is also a risk of stroke and heart attack.

Those taking medications called nitrates, or recreational drugs called poppers (amyl nitrate and butyl nitrate) should not take Levitra.

The most common side effects among people taking Levitra include stuffy nose, runny nose, headache, stomach upset, dizziness, and flushing. In most cases, these side effects disappear within a few hours. Very rare side effects may include priapism (erection lasts more than four hours, which can damage the penis, patients with priapism should seek medical attention), seeing a blue tinge to objects, and problems differentiating the color green from blue.

How long does levitra take to work?

With Levitra, the effects last for about 5 hours. With Viagra, the effects last approximately 4 hours. Cialis works a bit faster (within about 15 minutes), and the effects last much longer -- up to 36 hours in some cases. Stendra can start working in as little as 15 minutes and last up to 6 hours. Take a tablet 25-60 minutes before you plan to have sex. Do NOT take more than one dose in 24 hours.

What are the Levitra Side Effects?

The most common side effects with Levitra are flushing, stuffy or runny nose, headache, and upset stomach. These side effects go away themselves within a few hours and if not then contact your Doctor if side effects are severe. In general, Levitra and Viagra have similar side effects, and similar percentages of people will experience side effects. Some side effects are seen in one pill more than another, for instance, visual disturbance is only seen in Viagra.

Who should not take Levitra?

Patients who take nitrate-containing medications or use recreational nitrate drugs known as "poppers" shouldn't take Levitra. The combination of Levitra with nitrates could cause a patient's blood pressure to suddenly drop to abnormally low levels. This could cause him to faint or become dizzy. In some cases, the patient could suffer a heart attack or a stroke.
